New Hampshire Skiing

Yesterday was the first day skiing. We went to the ski hire shop first thing and picked up our gear. Thankfully the car seats drop forward despite it being a saloon which means getting to and from the lifts is really easy. Its a 3 minute drive and all the gear can live in the car which makes it even easier than a ski in ski out hotel.

The boys had a quick photo in the local cable car and then we hit the slopes. The weather was great, the snow conditions were really easy and it wasn’t long before the speed picked up and we were cruising the pistes.

We stuck to the blue and green slopes to start with until our ski legs came back under us and then we made our way to the top. The boys had resumed normal service of trying to go as fast as possible although with Harrison there is more of a new development. He now wants to ride banks and do jumps and tricks. It means he’s focusing more on his technique. Callan still wants straight lines as fast as possible…

At times it was a little breezy but as soon as you moved away from the top the trees dulled the wind. You could see it whipping up the snow from the surface and we saw a few twisters as it wound the snow into the air.

We found ourselves a spot on a piste called ‘bonanza’ which we aptly named windy ridge. We got the selfie stick out only for a local ski patrol to stop and cheerfully volunteer to take a picture of us.

It was time for a break and we stopped at our first restaurant. In a stunning twist of fate they sell Starbucks coffee so settle into a couple of cups and some cake. We found Callan’s dream pastry which was a double choc muffin that was filled with marshmallow fluff.. he was in heaven, but still willing to share.

We headed back out for another blast. Amy was really impressing me. All that dog training twice a week and competing at weekends seems to have lifted her stamina to new league. She was comfortably out in front skiing virtually from top to bottom with the boys pushing to match her pace. I think she surprised herself but it made for really entertaining skiing and with the app we found for the second half of the day we covered over 15km.

It was soon time to stop for lunch at the next restaurant we found (think there are three to sample). This one served alcohol and so we had to sample the hot cider and bourbon drink. Turned out it was pretty potent..

We went for one final session until the point all our bodies began to say it was time to return. On making it back to the hotel the boys immediately began to insist on swimming. For a while we had the pool to ourselves and then it began to fill with kids and floating toys so they played for another hour or so while Amy and I sat on loungers. We met a couple from Cambridge (UK) who in that small world way were also in the middle of New Hampshire.

Harrison over did it a bit and hit an energy wall. I don’t think he’s experienced anything like that before and he virtually needed carrying to the restaurant for food. After a refuel they headed to the games room in the basement and came back with some treasured plastic toys won doing some intricate gaming task.

At 8pm we’d all flaked out, Amy was asleep from 7.15 but we managed to get to 4am before we woke. The timing now isn’t too bad as breakfast starts at 6am and we can catch the first lift at 8am.

The weather is set fair for today as I sit in bed and write this post. At the moment its -15c so we’re going need plenty of hot cider.
