Wow it’s cold

The second days skiing took a little longer to get started than I’d hoped. It had been about -20 over night and the car was solidly frozen. Amy’s tortilla loyalty card that she’d given me to scrape the windows was looking worse for wear. Equally, the plan of leaving everything in the car was a good one up until the point that when I came to put my boots on and they’d frozen solid. I had to hold them under the car’s heater to defrost them sufficiently to get them on which left my feet chilly for most of the morning. Won’t make that mistake again.

There wasn’t a cloud in the sky but it was bitterly cold. The first run down happened in a flash as there was hardly anyone there and the surface was slick. Realising that the lift named ‘sunbowl’ was done so for a reason we left the shaded part of the mountain to see if the sun would lift the temperature a little.

The skiing was great. There was hardly anyone around and it meant we cruised down the mountain in almost isolation. It didn’t take long however, for Harrison to begin to complain that he was cold. Particularly his fingers as his gloves had done a couple of seasons and weren’t really bridging the gap across his wrist to his jacket. We’d tried and failed to text Mike to see us on the web cam so decided the only thing for it was to head for the mountain top cafe and have a hot drink.

They had an open fire so we parked Harrison in front of it whilst Amy got drinks and I searched the vast array of winter clothing accessories in the back pack. Once he’d thawed out we added an additional hat and neck warmer to the one he was already wearing and found some fleece under gloves. With not a patch of skin in sight we appeared to have cured the problem when we headed back out.

Amy texted Mike that we were on our way and this time success. He’d clearly caught a glimpse of us on the webcam as she could hear her phone buzzing in her pocket. It was just too cold to get it out at the time…

We’d brought the gopro camera with us for the first time so tried doing some filming. Unfortunately we’re having a technical hitch and can’t upload any footage so I’ve put a load more photos below including our attempt at a panoramic.

Amy also got some other bits with her phone. We also spotted a Hercules flying over really low and Callan decided it was time to play in the snow.

The day’s skiing came to an end so we decided as we were in the car to go and do some shopping. We were light on snacks and it was about half an hour to the nearest Walmart we headed straight off.

Harrison was tired again as he and I had done a few extra runs and nodded straight off. We left him in the car as we had a mission to find Marshmallow Fluff which Callan had seen in Boston and was desperate to sample.

With our mission successful I was dismayed to find out Amy had spotted another craft shop on the approach to Walmart, in fact, make that two. This was her birthday trip so I relented and we started in a quilting shop before heading into a similarly monsterous store called Hobby Lobby. The crafting stash was added to before it was time to find somewhere to eat.

Pizza had been promised and we found a restaurant called Ziggy’s. The food was really good with Harrison and I having hot dogs and Amy and Callan having pizza. Callan thoroughly enjoyed his two slices with Amy bringing some of hers back for later.

It was a really good day and the forecast is for it to be really cold and sunny again tomorrow.

Looking forward to it.
