Race Day

Today has been another glorious day for skiing. Still loads of snow and not a cloud in the sky. If anything it’s been a little too warm as the snow got a bit soft this afternoon.

It’s that time of the holiday when getting out of bed becomes more of a challenge. Not being used to 6-8 hours of exercise a day begins to take it’s toll but the slopes were beckoning and there was no way we were going to miss out.

We started off by going with the boys ski group. Harrison was feeling much better today but not quite 100%. After a few runs it was obvious that he was back to himself and it was now Amy’s legs that were beginning to hurt.

Today was race day for the boys. All of the ski school groups ran a giant slalom course against the clock. It was going to be a tough ask as in the boys group were chidren much older and more experienced than them. My guess is one girl was more like 15.

Harrison was brilliant. His technique has improved massively and he came 4thby a very narrow margin, 0.05 of a second. When I watched back the video you can see him begin to put the brakes on before the finish line otherwise it would have been a podium finish.

Callan was also really good and completed the course with only one slight hitch that he missed the finish line and stopped next to where Harrison and I were standing. Never mind, great effort Callan.

After the excitement of the competition a mountain restaurant was calling and we left the boys. It was nice to sit outside in the sun and take in the mountain air and scenery.

We met with the boys later as they finished their lesson for our picnic. Callan was feeling the pace and wanted to go back to the hotel, even after being fueled with a second chocolate bar. Part of his thinking was that he wanted to play in the snow but hadn’t foreseen that not many of the other children would have made it back yet.

I couldn’t stop skiing with the conditions the way they were and Harrison was up for more. He and I headed for France on our own little adventure while Amy and Callan headed back.

We climbed high in the mountains of Montgenevre and tried some runs we hadn’t done before. We found a great run right at the top that was long, straight and with rolling hills. This was a chance for us both to hit top speed and blast back towards Italy.

Harrison was excellent. He’s really improved. He even tackled a black slope with ease, only needing to stop when his legs got a little tired (and mine too for that matter). With all that being said, he managed the whole day without a single fall.

Back at the hotel and waiting for dinner. I’m starving after trying to keep up with H so looking forward to dinner and one last day in the mountains tomorrow.
