First day in Claviere, Italy

2am start, could have done without that.  But as it happens the zombie mode I’d slipped into means it’s already forgotten.

We flew with TUI from Stansted which was all going well. Harrison spotted the prayer room which sparked him to ask what that was for. Rob said, “Well its for religious people who want to pray.” to which Harrison replied, “Is that so they can hope the flight isn’t doomed.”

That omen aside, the rest of the flight went well. Harrison did revisit this as we approached Turin saying, “Looks like the flight wasn’t doomed after all.” I remember thinking… ‘we haven’t landed yet’…..

We took a coach up into the Alps which were looking fabulous, both as we flew over them and as we began to climb through the foothills. Despite it being fully Spring, there is plenty of snow still around with more forecast through the week. There was a beautiful vista of the Matterhorn against stark blue skies as we headed for Claviere.

To skip the queues in the ski hire shop, we threw our bags in our room taking a short moment to look at the lovely wooden vaulted ceilings. Out into the village and down to the ski shop, unusually owned by a man with a broad Yorkshire accent. Didn’t see that coming. After dropping our skis back to the room we spotted that the French border was around 100m from our hotel and that the villagers seemed to be fluent in Italian, French and English. As I seem to default to my pigeon French when speaking to anyone from abroad this had a benefit when trying to converse with the Italians.

As I write this, we’ve just had dinner which was 5 courses but did take forever. Callan happily tucked into the local lasagne and Harrison chose to have a King prawn. It’s an unusual feeling as a parent when your child chooses something you really don’t like but have to brave the stomach churning to encourage healthy eating. Amy was pulling a face which said, ‘I’m not touching it, you can help him strip the shell off’. Harrison however was quickly pulling the thing apart and wondering what bit to eat first. As I plucked the legs with a small amount of sick rising in my throat he enthusiastically ate the white meat and decided it was good stuff.

Tiredness is now setting in. The squabbling between the boys has subsided and sleep is ever nearer.

The weather looks fabulous for tomorrow and can’t wait to get skiing.

The upside is that so far we haven’t been doomed!!
