Day 6 – First day skiing

First day skiing had the instant requirement for 4 sets of skis. We’d brought ours with us but with the boys still growing we needed to go and hire them some. This meant a trip into Lake Placid first thing for a bite to eat and go to the hire shop.

The town is really beautiful. It’s seems to have a permanent Christmas feel and could easily find itself in a Hallmark Rom Com. We found a Bagel shop and sat drinking coffee and eating breakfast sausage, bacon and egg bagels which gave us a solid start to the day.

We walked down to Mirror Lake which was frozen solid and covered in snow for a quick photo before a stroll down Main Street as we waited for the ski shop to open. The town has a really laid back feel and picture post card shops all still adorned in white fairy lights. The shops are like our Christmas village with examples including a chocolate shop, a popcorn shop, a beef jerky experience, a creperie and a bookshop.

The steady nature of the high street meant that opening time for the skip shop came and went with no sign of anyone. After 20 minutes we decided to leave it and rent the skis from the mountain. After the two and fro to make sure all the gear and people are in the right place and wearing the right things we we off up the Gondola. The weather is almost spring like. Plenty of snow but quite warm and a little slushy towards the bottom.

It wasn’t long before our ski legs had returned and we were doing the family snake down the side of the mountain. The resort was amazingly quiet. We had pistes to ourselves and none of the early concern around dodging other skiers whilst your best technique returned. After a couple of hours the need for a rest beckoned and we made our way to the base camp restaurant.

We had a bite to eat, Callan once more consuming sweet potato fries and a chance to examine the ski map more closely. Favourite runs were beginning to emerge with Callan already enjoying ‘Excelsior’ which had tube like s bends meaning high speed with relative safety as you banked round the corners.

Amy’s legs were feeling the pace so she indulged in another glass of wine whilst the boys and I headed back up the mountain. She found herself a beautiful spot on the outside deck next to a fire pit.

The increased speed combined with afternoon fatigue meant that mistakes were more likely. Callan had a minor mishap, over running a turn and ending up tangled in a piste side bush. Fortunately Harrison was to hand to remove his skis and dash to his aid. He dragged his brother from the foliage and dusted him down. Not even a bump on this one but an indication that perhaps we should make this the last run.

Back to the room and the aches of the day’s exertion were apparent.

The next days weather is looking fairly similar to todays. Can’t wait to get going again.
