Tuesday was a travel day. Time to hire a car and head up into the mountains. We packed up our bags and went to retrieve the car via the obligatory Starbucks trip.
We have a Chrysler Malibu which is not a bad car and most importantly, big enough to fit our clothes and the mountains of stuff Amy and Callan bought at Michael’s.
With that in mind, we went to a retail park in Manchester, New Hampshire where the first place we visited was Michael’s. And this one was bigger, much bigger, although the volume purchased was more manageable.
We found a Chipotle for lunch and had a combination of burritos and fajitas which went down very well and caused Callan to install it as his favourite restaurant ahead of McDonalds.
We took the opportunity to go to the T-mobile shop next door and buy an American Sim Card so we had a phone for the next stage of the journey.
As we finished our lunch the snow began to fall but there was one last thing to do before we started the main part of the journey. Have another Starbucks. Harrison had googled and found that they do Pokemon frappachinos and set Amy on a mission. Fortunately there was a Barista who remembered the recipe from a promotion around 3 years ago. It did make him happy.
I was beginning to get to grips with driving on the right but the drive became really challenging. The snow was falling hard and the road had become a sheet of ice. It didn’t seem to both the Lorries who came powering past as if it was the height of summer. I chose to tuck in behind one in the knowledge that if he had to brake I could stop quicker and if he hit anything it would comfortably knock it out of my way. We saw a couple of accidents along the route but the tactics were successful.
We settled into the new Hotel, the Sunapee Lake Lodge and then went for a quick look around. Next to the Hotel is an Irish Pub that we chose to have dinner at. I wasn’t particularly hungry so though I would just have some Nachos. They basically arrived on a baking tray and despite my best efforts I only managed a small dent.
The snow has continued to fall all day. The snowploughs have been out attempting the clear the car park as there’s been about 6 inches. The weather is set fair for the next four days and I can’t wait to hit the slopes (assuming I can defrost the car as all I have is a credit card…).
We’re about to go for breakfast and then head for the ski hire shop.
