Day 2 in Claviere

One of the first things I always do when on holiday is check the weather. Crystal has provided a ski app with maps and other functions which also included a weather forecast. It had been saying all day that there was no snow on the cards for today. How far from the truth.

The boys were instantly up for more skiing and only further enthused by the view from our window. Amy and I were a little more reluctant to drag our already aching bodies out of bed.

Yesterday Harrison had made the mistake of not eating enough for breakfast so today I was going to make sure he didn’t do that again.

Breakfast is a large spread of English and Continental style food. The boys had coco pops, yogurt, bacon and raisins. I went for the cooked with a selection of a little bit of everything else. Well what is all inclusive about if not indulging yourself. We also slipped a couple of croissants into our bag (I think I can say that) to supplement the sandwiches for lunch.

With the snow falling we made our way towards the ski school. Already the boys are in the routine and shot off ahead to wait for their instructor. We had put our skis in for a service last night thinking it would be icy but the powder was already forming across the piste.

We boarded one of the few chair lifts working and headed for the top of the mountain in the hope we would pop through the clouds. However, even 2000m above sea level there was still heavy snow and grey clouds.

It did make for fun if somewhat challenging skiing. The powder is great as you can carve fresh tracks in the snow but the difficulty increases as the day wears on and it forms into mounds.

The powder and visibility meant you couldn’t hold the speed you otherwise wanted to. Fear of unexpectedly heading off at great velocity into the forest had the knock on effect of not having enough speed for the flat or uphill sections.

So without further ado, we headed for a mountain restaurant. First lap we indulged in with an Italian coffee, next lap we sampled the beautifully warming mulled wine.

When we arrived back in Claviere to pick up the boys we were left with a dilemma. Eat then ski, ski then eat or just go back to the hotel and eat – you see where I’m headed with this all inclusive arrangement.

The boys chose to carry on with the skiing and finish early with the snow still falling. They were definitely more up for further exercise today than we were so the force feeding at breakfast had worked. Amy was feeling the lactic acid build up but solider like, boarded the lift to head for the top.

As we arrived, the boys swiftly changed their minds and decided that we should head for the hotel. Conditions were still heavy going with thick snow, not quite a blizzard (that’s not a reference to you Blizzie, though we do all miss you) but enough to make you think about where you going.

I’d do a Rob estimate that we’ve had around 15-20cm snow fall and it is still coming down as I write. We’re all excited about tomorrow as if the snow subsides a little the skiing will be great.

I’d check the weather forecast but I’m not sure I trust it….
